PATTERNS OF IMPROVEMENT : Proposal

Case study 1 : Proposal for the single mother's house
- the current construction of the proposed house is bad - in order to minimize the cost of the intervention - we suggest the placement of prefabricated OSB units in order to create the spaces needed ( kitchen, separated bedrooms for mother and children, wc/ shower unit )
Case study 2 : Proposal for the old lady's house
- Extend the old lady's living space by adding prefabricated OSB units for her kitchen, in this way she can afford create a wc/shower in her house
Case study 3: Shared space
-  Extend the common space in relation with the entrance of the patio

PATTERNS OF IMPROVEMENT : Analysis of the current space and intervention strategy

In order to achieve the improvements necessary we propose that the single mother and her children move from their  original house to a biggest house in the patio ( which is currently used as storage room ). We also propose that their previous house is being demolished in order to create a shared space in relation with the entrance in the patio. Also we are proposing an expansion of the old lady's house unit in order to be able to have her own bathroom.

PATTERNS OF IMPROVEMENT : Analysis of the current space

Our intervention's prothesis is to improve the living conditions of the residents and rearrange the shared space of the patio.

PATTERNS OF IMPROVEMENT : Analysis of the current space

The Patio Housing is consisted of small housing units organised around a central patio. The houses have residents of different ages. Each user uses the 'common' space in different way. The youngest child of a single mother who lives there ( 1 ) uses every corner of the patio in order to play. Most of the residents have built their own kitchen and toilet/shower room in their houses. Despite that the old lady ( 8 ), needs to use the outdoor toilet/ shower room throughout the day as she couldn't built one in her house. This fact makes her living conditions, inappropriate. Another important fact is the use of the common space. At the moment, the common space doesn't function as a good common space that can improve the living conditions and the bond between the patio's residents.

PATTERNS OF IMPROVEMENT : Visiting Barrio Liberdade and the Patio Housing

During our visit in Barrio Liberdade  - and in this particular Patio Housing development - we had the opportunity to talk with the local people and record their problems regarding their current living conditions.

PATTERNS OF IMPROVEMENT : The case of Barrio da Liberdade

Throughout the  century, Barrio da Liberdade constantly tampered beyond it's original core with constructions of illegal origin. Liberdade is currently under discussion in the redevelopment and the illegal expropriation of privately owned land for the construction of social neighborhoods, by the Council of Lisbon. Therefore, it is important to create patterns of improvement regarding the housing and the public space of the neighborhood.
