Working in Barrio Da Liberdade questions the role of the architect. What in such conditions can we do?
We have to take into account that this favela is a materialisation of an socio-economical system in which the house owner refuses to invest and asks astronomical rent and in which the tenant refuses to invest of simply does not have the means to do so.
So how do we as architects move through such a system?
When the Arts and Architecture Journal issued it's CASE STUDY HOUSE PROGRAM in 1945 they did this with the following stance:
"Agreeing that the whole matter is surrounded by conditions over which few of us have any control, certainly we can develop a point of view and do some organised thinking which might
come to a practical end."
Let's present the result of this workshop in that spirit!
